Great tips for moving home with pets
Your pets will affect every stage of your move – they may affect how you sell your property, what property you buy and even your moving day will need special consideration.
Before you move consider the following:
Viewers or estate agents may be put off by animals
- Find out if they are comfortable with your pet to look after them.
- Consider asking friends or family during viewing times or when the property is first marketed.
- Clear away any sign of pets, toys, beds and feeding bowls
- Mask pet smells
How suitable is the property you are moving to for your pet?
- Outside space
- Access to outside
- Temperature
- Inside space and being able to close off certain rooms
During the move:
If you are a pet owner, you’ll know that pets are highly sensitive to changes in their environment and causes them a lot of stress. On the day, pets could be upset by:
- A lack of routine,
- Strange people (e.g. removal men)
- Changes to territory.
Consider their needs when the moving day arrives:
- Send them to kennels or to a familiar person for a few days during the move.
- Leave small pets in a quiet place whilst the removals is happening.
- Consider buying calming pheromone sprays for cats.
- Make sure you bring any cats inside before you start moving – if they wander outside on the day they may not be around when you actually need to leave.
When the move is over
- Show them rooms they are allowed in, and their new bed.
- Get back into your old daily routine as soon as possible.
- Keep cats inside for at least 24hrs and feed them before you let them out.
- Walk dogs on a lead until they are familiar with the area.
- Make sure the garden is secure.
- Change the details on identity tags.
- Update micro chip details or consider getting this done.
- Update your pet insurance policy provider with your new address.
- Register with your nearest veterinary surgery.
