Moving with disabilities
Moving house is difficult at the best of times but disabled people face a whole range of extra issues that can make the process even more challenging.
Before moving consider the following:
- Do you buy a house that is already accessible or pay for adaptations?
- What are disability services like near your new home?
- Can you meet additional costs e.g. support/care assistants or transport costs?
- Can you Transfer any services you currently receive (e.g. specialist health or education support)
- Can you meet additional costs e.g. support/care assistants or transport costs.
Some property types are more suited to certain disabilities. For example with a new-build wheelchair access should be automatically provided and any special facilities can be incorporated from the start. Rooms should be light and free of clutter. Be careful with older properties as they may be darker inside, on different levels or have steps between rooms or to the outside.
