What is a green energy tariff?

As all of our energy is delivered via the national grid it’s impossible to say that the energy you use is from renewable resources. Green energy tariffs work in any of these ways:

  1. Inputting the same amount of energy you use as renewable energy into the national grid.
  2. Investing into research or construction of green energy facilities
  3. Off-setting the amount of Co2 your household energy produces through co2 reducing schemes such as planting trees.

The main companies offering renewable energy prices, in no particular order are:

  • Ecotricity : Ecotricity
  • Green Energy UK : Green Energy
  • Good Energy : Good Energy
  • London Energy : Green Tariff
  • Npower : juice
  • Powergen : Greenplan
  • Scottish and Southern Energy : RSPB Energy
  • Seeboard Energy : Go Green
  • SWEB Energy : Green Tariff

Each of these companies is committed to providing a renewable energy tariff that is affordable to every domestic energy customer.

What is renewable or ‘green energy’?

Renewable electricity can be generated from:

  • wind power
  • wave and tidal
  • solar photovoltaics (PV)
  • hydro generation (from dams)
  • geothermal (ground heat)
  • and biomass (energy from forestry or crops).

Why are these ‘green’?

These sources of energy are considered more environmentally friendly because they produce no carbon at all or, in the case of biomass, produce only the carbon they have already absorbed from the atmosphere when growing.

Most of the energy produced and consumed in the uk comes from the burning of non-renewable fossil fuels such as coal, gas or petroleum or from nuclear power stations using the non-renewable resource uranium.
